Since 1978, Expert has been internationally involved in the development of organic powder coatings. His expertise lies mainly in bringing novel technical concepts from the laboratory to full commercial status, both in North America and Europe. His knowledge spans from the intricacies of the polymers and curing agents to the practical aspects of applying the finished powder coating at the end user. The market areas that have benefited from Expert's coating technology expertise include the automotive (primers, clearcoats), appliance (coatings for washers, refrigerators), and general industries. Some of his work has involved new application processes including powder coating coil, blanks, and non-traditional substrates such as wood and plastic. His most recent work has been pioneering the development and commercial introduction of UV-curable powder coatings. Expert continues to publish internationally in this exciting growth area of the coating industry.

Expert's experience as a driver of new powder coating technology has kept him intimately involved with powder coating specifications. In many cases the new technology he developed required unique specifications. Expert's positions as Development Manager, Section Leader, and Project Leader in global powder coating companies have allowed him to work closely with the people who draft powder coatings specifications.

Not only is Expert familiar with the processes associated with powder coatings, he has also been closely involved with many of the newest processes as they have emerged. His experience dates back to the early days of powder commercialization in the 1970s. At that time, "bugs" were being worked out of what is today known as the conventional electrostatic application process. Expert has been on the forefront of new process development including tribocharge powder application, powder spray to blanks and coils, powder applications to wood and plastic, and the use of UV-curable powder coatings.

A significant portion of Expert's career has involved the formulation of powder coatings. His main areas of expertise encompass the appliance, automotive, and general industrial markets. He has extensive experience with the following chemical types of powder coatings: epoxy, hybrid (epoxy-polyester), polyester, polyester-urethane, polyester-amide, polyester-glycoluril, acrylic-polyester, acrylic-epoxy, acrylic-urethane, acrylic-diacid, silicone, fluorcarbon, and ultraviolet curable technology. He has held positions as Chemist, Senior Chemist, Project Leader, Section Leader, and Development Manager at two global powder coating companies (ICI-Glidden and Herberts). His formulating experience spans both North America and Europe.

Being intimately involved in the formulation and commercialization of coating powders has given Expert experience in characterizing powders to suit the needs of the eventual coating user. He has a firm knowledge of traditional test methods including: particle size measurement, rheological characterization (viscosity and flow), kinetic analysis, mechanical performance, color assessment, chemical resistance, and durability versus the outdoors. In addition to traditional analysis techniques, Expert has experience with test method development.
