He was one of the pioneers in using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other surface analytical techniques to understand the degradation of adhesive bonds and to develop processes to improve durability. Later, he invented a series of coating health monitors that allow electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to be performed under ambient conditions instead of the hitherto required immersion conditions. These sensors detect corrosion of painted structures and moisture intrusion and degradation of polymeric materials during accelerated tests and field service. He has also helped develop a series of portable electrochemical cells that can be used in the field on large structures. One specific use of these cells is to detect sensitization of 5XXX aluminum alloys on Navy ships.
In addition, he has used his background in surface analysis, electrochemistry, and materials science for process development and failure analysis of manufactured components and processes that enabled improvements in reliability and yield, realization of cost savings, and resumption of production.
Expert has been the Program Manager or Principal Investigator of over $10 million dollars of government and external industrial contracts, including several successful Phase II SBIR programs resulting in patented technology and licenses.
He has given over 40 invited presentations at several national and international conferences and short courses and has co-authored over 185 publications, including thirteen book chapters and two (edited) proceedings volumes. He has five patents.
He has served as an officer of several professional organizations, including President of the Adhesion Society, and has served on the editorial boards of three major journals.
Expert has received several awards in recognition of his research involving the formation and degradation of interfaces relevant to adhesion, corrosion, and electronic devices. His most notable awards include the Jerome Kruger Award from NACE, the William Blum Award from The Electrochemical Society, the Distinguished Young Scientist of the Maryland Academy of Sciences, the Robert L. Patrick Fellow of the Adhesion Society, Fellow of the Electrochemical Society, Fellow of ASM International, and Fellow of the American Vacuum Society. He is also listed in numerous biographical Who's Who.
