Expert investigated coupling and transport of light through whispering gallery modes in spherical particles. He employed spheres in the range of 3-20 micron range for WGM generation and transport. He used dye doped spheres to generate WGMs and employed passive spheres to characterize the transport of light in chains of spheres. He excited the dye doped spheres using focused tunable laser beam. He characterized coupling between size mismatched spheres. He developed samples of chains and bispheres using micromanipulation and imaging. He spatially selected the spheres of interest using in-house developed microscope and analyzed spectra using liquid cooled spectrometer. He also developed crystals using these spherical micro-particles by hydro-dynamic flow based techniques. He along with his advisor proposed new understanding of percolation of light in these crystals based on whispering gallery modes’ coupling and transport.
He also explored polycrystalline opals for their optical properties. Though opals are always considered as single crystalline, in practice obtaining a single crystal opal is near impossible because of manufacturing defects. In general opals exhibit single peak in reflection mode arising from Bragg phenomena. In polycrystalline opals, he observed multiple peaks originating from reflections between the domains. The beauty of these crystals is that all the domains were in a single crystal but rotated orientations. These domains enable multiple reflections between the domains.
