Request Expert

Expert received his MD degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1963. He completed his rotating internship and postdoctoral research training in Neuropharmacology in 1965. After completing his training, Expert served as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service for 20 years as a Physician, Chief, and Scientific Director of the Addiction Research Center focusing on both clinical research and medical research on mental health and drug abuse issues.

Expert is board certified by the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology in clinical pharmacology with a special focus on neuropharmacology and drug and substance use. He has focused most of his career in researching clinical pharmacology of abused substances and the causes, treatment and prevention of substance abuse.

He has served as a consultant for the National Academy of Science and the American Medical Association Council on Mental Health, providing consultation services on topics such as drug dependency problems, drug abuse, narcotics antagonists and mental health issues. Internationally, he has served as a consultant for the World Health Organization providing consulting services on the evaluation of drug liability and dependency, and psychotropic substances (as expert consultant). He has also served as a medical consultant for the NFL for 3 years.

His past research activities and publication has been on topics such as narcotic antagonists, morphine agonists, drug dependence liability, analgesics and drug abuse, sedative-hypnotics and opiate use and other abuse potential, morphine-like drugs, nonaddicting analgesics, PCP, chemotherapy of addiction, opioid receptors and classification, pharmacologic treatment of dependence, reinforcing properties of drugs and narcotic analgesics to name a few.

His expertise in pharmacology include teaching and presenting the basic principles of pharmacology and therapy to medical students and university students specifically related to drug addiction, understanding and updating current concepts and research in drug abuse, analyzing the relationship between psychopharmacology and aging, assessing and analyzing the concept of dependence particularly regarding drugs and other narcotic substances. He is also a pioneer in developing methods to better understand the field of drug abuse and predicting dependence liability of stimulant and depressant drugs. As a U.S. Public Health Service member, he has also presented clinical aspects of drug addiction in an effort to promote a better understanding of issues related to drug addiction, drug dependency and alcoholism. He has also assisted in the process of classifying opioid agonist and antagonist. He has done several studies to investigate and evaluate the treatment of tobacco smoking and nicotine addiction. He is also involved in educating primary care physicians on practical clinical management regarding drug addiction.

Expert was appointed a consultant by the National Academy of Science, National Research Council on the Committee on Problems of Drug Dependence and the Committee on Evaluation of Narcotic Antagonists between 1971-1978. Expert was appointed a consultant by the American Medical Association Council on Mental Health on the Committee on Drug Dependence from 1974-1975. Expert was appointed a consultant by the World Health Organization Scientific Group on Progress in Methology of Evaluation of Dependence Liability of Drugs in 1974, as well as the World Health Organization Expert Committee to Determine "The Function of WHO under the Convention of Psychotropic Substances" in 1977, and again as an expert consultant by the World Health Organization Expert Committee on Drug Dependence "Review of Psychotropic Substances." Expert was appointed as a medical consultant for the National Football League for 3 years.
