Expert graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1988 with a BSc in Physiological Sciences. He then moved to Employer to complete a PhD in Intestinal Physiology (1988-1991). As post-doctoral researcher at Kings College (1992-2001) Expert worked on genes controlling iron metabolism, during which time he discovered several genes which control absorption of iron from the diet. In 2001 he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry and in 2006 Expert of Iron Metabolism within the Division of Nutritional Sciences at KCL. He is head of the Iron Metabolism Research Group at Kings is involved in teaching intestinal physiology, iron metabolism and gene expression to undergraduates.

Expert has worked with Unilever in developing iron supplements to treat iron deficiency. Expert has acted as a consultant to the pharmaceutical company Vifor regarding regulation of iron metabolism.
