Performance Engineering and Performance Diagnosis of IT Systems
ID: 728391
India
Expert is a doctoral Fellow of IIM Calcutta in the field of Operations Research, and has over 16 years of IT industry experience. His experience spans technology consulting, software engineering research, and education. He has led CIO-level technology consulting engagements for several Fortune 1000 clients in multiple domains including manufacturing, distribution, and financial services. He has published papers in a variety of reputed international journals such as IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, IEEE Software, IEEE Distributed Systems and Mathematical Programming. In his previous position he was Associate Vice President and Head, Technology Consulting for the Transportation and Services vertical of Infosys Technologies Ltd.
Expert has applied his knowledge of Operations Research, specifically combinatorial optimization and graph-based algorithms, to several industry problems, such as the design of a Web service engine to implement the Analytic Hierarchy Process, the design of a decision support system incorporating quantitative and formal models for costing and fault diagnosis in geothermal well drilling operations, and the design of a custom branch and bound algorithm to speedily solve a special case of a resource leveling problem.
The client was faced with the task of baselining the performance of the world's most established enterprise product, and meeting performance expectations at strategic customer deployments in the United States.
"PEA made us think scientifically about our approach to handling product performance. In the middle of a critical schedule, they quickly demonstrated how we could bring quantitative methods and rigor to our performance test strategy and thereby cut down on testing and analysis efforts by orders of magnitude. They convinced us that adoption of rigorous, scientific approaches is not something you do only in your spare time, but something that you can do when in a crisis to yield benefits - in effort, time, money as well as credibility - in real time."The client, a well-known name in the area of industrial automation, had set up a Performance Center of Excellence that felt the need for conceptual as well as hands-on technical guidance on Performance Engineering, covering a variety of projects in the aerospace and control systems domains.
"We turned to PEA for guidance on several aspects on Application Performance Engineering & Capacity Planning. The one important investment we made was in the three PEA methodology packs on workload modeling, capacity planning and performance testing. These packs clearly brought out what it means to conduct each of these activities with scientific rigor, and provided refreshingly different and pragmatic prescriptions for incorporating this rigor into the everyday practice of PE."
