As well as being an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist, Prof Expert is a Chartered Neuropsychologist and Member of the British Neuropsychiatry Association, and a former Mental Health Act Commissioner.

He has received numerous acclamations, awards and prizes from the Mental Health Foundation (Scholarship), Cambridge University (Baron ver Heyden de Lancey), Newcastle University (Wilfred Kingdom), and a British Council travel award. He is an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Fellow at the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum (CINP).

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, British Psychological Society, Royal Society of Medicine (Representative to NICE and Psychiatry Section Council Member), and Invited Fellow of Royal Society of Arts, an International Member American Psychiatric Association, Emeritus Member American Association for the Advancement of Science.

He has been recognised by the General Medical Council under the European Specialist Medical Qualification Order 1995 and by the Secretary of State as having special expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.

He is also a Second Opinion Approved Doctor.
