Expert received her doctorate in ocean and climate physics from Columbia University. As a graduate research assistant, she published three peer-reviewed papers and presented her research at national and international conferences. That research focused on using hydrological data to predict ocean transport. Her published work integrates local and global scale climate phenomena and includes interpretation of climate model results.

She has been on six scientific research expeditions, the most recent of which was a two month trip to Antarctica. Her expertise includes the physics of global warming, ocean circulation, and the interpretation of model results. At sea, she has run the lowered acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) system, which uses acoustics to measure ocean velocity. Additional responsibilities included water profiling and salinity measurements.

Expert consulted on a project at the Center for Energy, Marine Transportation and Public Policy at the School of International Affairs at Columbia University. She provided background information on global ocean circulation and the extension of apoxia zones under global warming scenarios.
