Expert is a broad technologist and innovation leader with extensive experience in engineering and engineering management. He has strengths in multiple technical disciplines, inventions in over a dozen different fields, and well-honed ability regarding intellectual property strategy.
Technologies include computational mechanics in many forms, such as heat transfer, viscous fluid dynamics, nonlinear bistable elastomeric structures, and multi-coupled chaotic systems.
Products based on Expert's analyses and leadership include solar PVAC modules, circuit protection devices based on over-current (Raychem and Littelfuse) and over-voltage transients (Defense Special Weapons Agency). Expert's applicator designs and analyses of non-Newtonian cascade stability were key to Polaroid’s manufacture of photographic film. The Duracell battery tester, of which billions were sold, was based on his design and original finite element code.
His patents range from solar PV and solar-thermal heat exchangers to pulmonary drug delivery devices, the SX-70 camera, coronary angiography, sports biofeedback, drug packaging systems, endobronchial therapy, and quantum tunneling polymeric materials. Further innovation includes novel x-ray flow imaging, bistable hyperelastic valves, and super-vortex pulmonary drug delivery.
Expert has a passion for driving multidisciplinary teams to collective focus and innovation, including Raychem’s Computer Modeling Group, which he founded and staffed, Nektar’s Edison R&D Team, and other assemblies of talented and creative people.
PRESENT: Expert has been responsible for the fluid dynamics of a novel pulmonary delivery device for smoking cessation in concert with a truly international team. The design employs novel methods of vortex generation for efficient drug extraction and appropriate lung delivery.
On the same project, Expert employed creative nonlinear finite element analysis techniques to create a novel pressure-activated valve made of hyperelastic material. The valve was designed completely in model space and performed with precision on first molded article.
On behalf of the client company, four patents are being filed with Expert as sole or co-inventor. This blockbuster product is expected to release in 2015.2013 to PRESENT: Expert developed novel diffusion analysis methods to redesign a sustained-release drug-delivery product. The result: 70% less (expensive) drug required, more uniform release rate over time, more streamlined production methods, and better shelf life.
The diffusion analysis employs nonlinear FEA with unique methods to handle Fick's Second Law and Higuchi Principles.
RECENTLY: For a client company, Expert created and implemented corrective action and physics-based quality strategy for Photovoltaic Solar Modules.
This project had some international intrigue and tensions, as the modules were manufactured off-shore with high defect rate. The various solutions are too numerous to mention, but ranged from quantum mechanical analysis to design of test-and-repair strategies where Expert supervised and engaged hands-on. Boardroom meetings evolved from contentious to supportive as the collective project emerged with success.NONLINEAR MULTICOUPLED SYSTEM ANALYSIS AND DESIGN: As a consultant under SBIR Contract for Defense Special Weapons Agency, Expert was co-author of published EMP and HPM Suppression Techniques.
He derived original finite element methods to successfully model nonlinear spatially indeterminate (chaotic) systems with quantum tunneling and regenerative avalanche effects. Purpose: Protect sensitive electronic circuits from threats of High Power Microwave (HPM) and Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) from nuclear detonation.
Based on the insight from the modeling techniques, he invented semiconducting materials and design applications for quantum tunneling varistor devices.
Consultant for Avery Research, Pasadena, CA (research arm of Avery Label).
Expert Designed the Duracell on-board alkaline battery tester based on coupled, nonlinear, transient thermoelectric software employing the finite element method. He developed this software from derivation to code and post-processing imagery.
Billions of Duracell batteries using this on-board tester have been sold.
