Expert's expertise in surface and colloid chemistry has been applied to the free radical polymerization of vinyl chloride by both the suspension and emulsion routes. He has worked in research, developing new products and process and as technical manager responsible for production, laboratory and quality control, on world-scale polymerization plants.

It has included the use of protective colloids and dispersion stabilisers for the control of SPVC product properties, mimimising the residual VCM concentration, maximising reactor output, minimising fish-eyes and improving thermal stability. Expert has learnt how to control the properties of EPVC and PVC plastisols by modifying the polymerization process .

He has published papers on the mechanism of suspension polymerization and has filed patents on a number of new processes.

Expert has built up expertise on the processing and uses of PVC and its environmental impact. He has studied the global market for PVC and the companies that manufacturer it. He has investigated the PVC manufacturing chain from the production of chlorine and caustic soda, through the manufacture of vinyl chloride to the polymerization of PVC.

His work on emulsion polymerization has extended to the emulsion copolymerization of acrylic mononers for use in barrier and other coating applications. As research and technical manager he has been involved with customers and the formulation of paints.

All of this work has been underpinned by his extensive knowledge of surfactants and water soluble polymers.



Expert's knowldege of surfactant and colloid chemistry was used when he was asked to write a number of reviews on the technology of detergents and cleaning products. Thus he is knowledgable about the technology of laundry and cleaning products and the of their main ingredients, their surfactants, builders, bleaches, enzymes and polymers. He has specialised in researching ways of improving their environmental performance by reducing wash temperature, reducing water use and has investigated the prospects for renewable, sustainable ingredients.

One project involved interviewing industry practioners to indentify the new "Disruptive Technologies" likely to impact and alter the development of the industry over the next 10 years.

Expert's company has supplied a number of specialist formulations to some of the UK's elite Olympic athletes.

Developed a mechanism for the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride that led to the developed of a radically new method of controlling the morphology of grains of suspension PVC.
The model is generally accepted throughout the industry.Successfully transfered the emulsion polymerization process, used to manufacture an acrylic copolymer from the UK to Japan. Expert identified suitable global candidate manufacturers and then led the transfer process.Assembled a team of three experts (including himself) to assess the state of a salt, chloro-alkali, VCM and PVC Plant in the Middle East. Made recommendations to the national Government on options for the plant.A sports physiologist wished to test the effect of certain preparations on athletes but had no way of applying the ingredients. His company developed aqueous formulations which have been successfully used in the Universities experiments.He was asked to develop and run a processes to find out new technoogical innovations that would drive the cleaning products industry over the next 10 years
