After receiving his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan in 2000, he joined the research group of Prof. Christopher Monroe as the same institution to study trapped ion quantum computing. One of his experiments, on creating an entangled state of a single trapped atom and a single photon, opened a way to the new generation of trapped ion and single photon quantum information networks. The results of the experiment were reported in the journal of Nature, and resulted in a patent.
