Expert has experience in the use and selection of solid and liquid lubricants in conjunction with sliding materials to achieve the desired values of friction. This involves the use of test equipment to fully characterize the sliding friction of a lubricant package over a wide range of operating conditions. The intent here was to devise a friction "package" with a high level of insensitivity to changes in external operating conditions.
Expert has experience in the design of sliding pairs to minimize the formation of adhesive junctions through proper anti-seize compound selection. He has used surface modification techniques and alternative material selection to reduce galling tendencies.
Expert has experience testing the friction properties of various lubricants as a function of temperature. This includes the assessment of the relative merit of a particular boundary lubricant additive or solid lubricant formulation as a function of temperature.
Expert has investigated the effects of solid lubricants on sliding friction both in atmospheric and vacuum conditions. In addition, he is familiar with many types of commercially-available solid lubricant formulations for high-temperature applications.
Expert has experience in developing advanced mechanical characterization methods for polymer and organic coatings and thin-films. This includes the use of state-of-the-art nano-indentation and scratch testing equipment as well as advanced finite element modeling of the indentation and scratching process. This work is especially suited to materials which exhibit non-linear material properties, in the visco-elastic/plastic regimes. Expert is also applying these methods to coatings during the curing phase, such as in paints and other protective finishes.
