Expert has been specialized in clinical diabetes since 1987.Initally, he was involved in metabolic studies dealing with insulin action and secretion and factors of insulin resistance. Later on, he was involved in many investigator driven studies aiming to achieve insulin independence in type-1 diabetic subjects with the aid of organ pancreas transplantation and letter on with transplantation of pancreatic islets. His responsibility has been development of the clinical protocols, leadership of the study group, clinical immunosuppression and writing research reports and publications.
Expert also initiated and accomplished a clinical study with immune intervention in type-1 diabetes of early onset. As the principal investigator he took part in many commercial clinical studies focused on antidiabetic therapy in type-2 as well as type-2 diabetes (insulins, analogues, thiazolidin diones, DPP4 inhibitors, GLP-1 analogues and other), on antihypertensive therapy in diabetes, anemia treatment in diabetic nephropathy and on diabetic neuropathy.
Expert developed several clinical protocols that were approved by the local ethics and regulatory authorities and finally were performed in the Depertment of Diabetes in IKEM. The protocols were focuses on transplant therapy in diabetes and on immune intervention in early stages of diabetes. Expert also participated et the development of clinical protocols in iternational studies on imumunosuppressive therapy in pancreas transplantation (EOROSPK 01, 02 and 03.
Expert is the head of Department of Diabetes at the Diabetes Center in IKEM. He is responsible for diagnostics and in- as well as out-patient therapy (28beds, 2000 our-patients, large referral area). Mostly, Expert is specialized in internal medicine and in diabetes. Marginally, the disease spectrum includes endocrinology, clinical nutrition and obesity.
Expert has been appointed by the leadership of the Pancreatic Islet Laboratory in IKEM (10 co-workers). The studies are focused on development of techniques of islet isolation and transplantation, islet and beta-cell culture, metabolic studies with beta-cells, imaging of pancreatic islets (especially magnetic resonance imaging) development and characterization of insulin-producing cells from adult pancreatic and hematopoietic stem/precursor cells.
