Expert was a member of technical staff at Bellcore from 1984-1994, specializing in integrated and fiber optic device research. Many of his collaborations involved developing integrated optics for fiber-optic systems. He developed fiber lasers incorporating erbium fiber amplifiers with both acousto-optic and liquid crystal wavelength filters. He also coinvented a multimode fiber-optic scrambler. In 2000, Expert cofounded Movaz Newtorks, and was CTO developing and testing systems for fiber-optic communication. In the area of litigation support, he has testified in fiber optics for multiwavelength communication in two cases in the mid-1990s.
Expert developed integrated optics components for fiber communiction networks from the mid-1908s to the early 2000's. He conducted both device, subsystem and network experiments and has published many times in the area of multiple-wavelength amplified fiber-optic networks. In addition, he taught a short course in fiber transmission impairments to descrbe the capability and limitations of fully-transparent fiber-optic networks. In early 2000, Expert cofounded Movaz Networks, a successful fiber optic communication network node ebgineering and manufacturing company. In the area of litigation support, he has testified in fiber network and fiber component litigation.
Expert developed many fiber-optic-coupled optical components, primarily in the area of integrated optic modulators, switches and tunable filters. He also developed a polarization scrambler using a multimode fiber preprocessor for coherent optical receivers. He has published extensively in fiber-amplified networks and also codeveloped two different kinds of fiber ring laser, acousto-optically tuned and liquid crystal filter tuned. His work involved low-loss fiber coulping to integrated optics devices as well. Developing components which provide polarization diversity in response to single mode fiber polarization properties was a major focus over his fifteen years of research in devices for fiber-optic networks. He has patents in multiple-wavelength fiber-optic switches.
Expert was the electronics expert for his experimental physics group at MIT in the mid-to-late 1970s. After obtaining his Ph.D. in 1980, he focussed on optics and optoelectronics. He developed optical modulators and switches for telecommunication applications at Bellcore from 1984-1994. As a professor of electrical enginnering from 1994-2000, he taught electromagnetics and digital and analog communications. Research from 1980 to 2000 included development of instrumentation to support his more basic research. He worked on telecommunication network node product development as cofounder and CTO of Movaz Networks from 2000-2001. From the late nineties on, he has engaged in litigation support services that often dealt with electronics, optics and mechanics in various consumer products, from toys to arcade machines to flashlights to computer-telephone interfaces. He has opined in aspects of all of the above areas and has also prepared reports on firmware, digital signal processing and software reverse engineering.
Expert owns several US patents, about half of them licensed at one time or another. After cofounding Movaz Networks, a fiber-optic network subsystem manufacturer, he was responsible for licensing a seminal patent in optical swicthing and for managing the invention disclosure and patent continuation program. For over ten years he has served as an expert witness in patent infringement and validity cases in areas including optical fiber components and networks, consumer optics and electronics and microprocessor controlled interfaces, including digital signal processing. He spends more than half of his professional time on litigation support.
