STRESS ANALYSIS; STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS. Expert provides his clients with cost-effective stress and deflection analysis of their rotating equipment. In situations where analyses results do not meet the specifications or when an upgrade is required by the client, Expert can recommend design or material changes to lower stresses or deflections to meet the allowable limits. He has performed over 100 analyses of different rotating equipment.
MODAL ANALYSIS. Expert also provides vibration analysis of rotating equipment to determine natural frequencies and mode shapes of vibration. He identifies the frequencies that can be detrimental to the operation of the hardware and can recommend design changes to shift or eliminate these frequencies so that the hardware operates safely.
LOW-CYCLE FATIGUE. Welded rotating equipment operating under start/stop conditions require scheduled inspections to ensure that fatigue cracks are detected before reaching a critical size. Fatigue life prediction of rotating equipment can help optimize the inspection schedules. Expert provides fatigue life estimation based on stress and low-cycle fatigue analyses. In other situations, where a minimum fatigue life may be required by the client, Expert can help modify the design to obtain the needed fatigue life by lowing the stress levels in the critical regions.
SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET. Using his knowledge of finite element-based software, Expert has determined the magnetic field and resulting stresses in conventional and superconducting magnets. He determined the distribution and magnitude of the magnetic field using ANSYS. These fields resulted in forces acting on the conductors in the magnet. The force distribution from electromagnetic analysis was then used to determine deflections and stresses in the magnet.
HIGH-TEMPERATURE PIPING SYSTEM. Expert was responsible for the redesign of a furnace where uncontrolled sagging and shadowing of pipes had resulted in uneven radiative heating and reduced hydrocarbon cracking. The results f's analysis called for a redesign, which worked perfectly in the field.
COMPUTER FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS; FINITE ELEMENT MODELING. Expert has applied his knowledge of finite element analysis to the design analysis, failure analysis, and verification of a variety of components and systems. He has performed linear and nonlinear finite element analysis to ensure that static, dynamic, and thermal characteristics of a composite structure were within functional specifications. The finite element software he has used include ANSYS, NASTRAN, INERTIA, WECAN, ALGOR, COSMOS, and IDEAS.
Expert was retained as a structural analyst in a $180 million law suit. He determined, through finite element analysis that the design of a particular furnace (with high-temperature piping) was defective. As a result of his analysis, the suit was settled out of court. He was then retained to redesign the system.He found deficiencies in the design of a series of industrial fans. The findings led to field inspections, revealing fatigue cracks in the fans. His design modifications saved millions of dollars in replacement costs. Expert modified the design of a rotary mill for higher throughput, increasing the capacity of the mill by 22% and reducing the development time by 6 months.Expert analyzed the design of a 500 ton ore crusher and modified the design to meet stringent requirements for static, and dynamic loads, and infinite fatigue life.
