Expert has been involved in the research and development of encapsulation technologies since 1982. He received a patent in 1986 for a heat sealing device for thermoplastic materials, which allows the macroencapsulation of hazardous and radioactive wastes, and has frequently been used successfully in these fields.
The majority of Expert's career has been involved in the design, development, and manufacture of hazardous waste packaging, primarily non-bulk sizes. The products were designed for various levels of radioactive wastes and hazardous wastes, including PCBs and medical wastes. He also holds numerous patents for products in this area.
Expert has developed and patented a unique method for heat sealing two plastic parts together on an automated basis. This technology has been used in the environmental field, radioactive waste containment, and is being considered for use in manholes.
Expert has developed and patented several secondary containment products used to containerize hazardous wastes. Additionally, he has been involved in the design and implementation of an environmental vault system for long-term, monitored, retrievable storage of transuranic mixed wastes for a Department of Energy facility.
Expert has spent much of his career developing packaging for radioactive and hazardous waste applications. As a result, many projects have involved mixed waste applications. Using various composites such as FRP/PE and Steel/PE, he has developed many products specific to mixed waste packaging applications.
Expert has spent much of his career developing unique packages for environmental applications, many of which are patented. The designs are usually nontraditional, using polyethylene, composites, or unique combinations.
Expert developed the first use of this technology for Department of Energy mixed radwaste packaging (drums). Much of his work has been involved in bonding Pe to the interior and exteriors of containers, tanks, and steel boxes. He has also developed containers with fluoropolymers (such as Teflon) bonded to the inside or outside of steel containers.
A significant portion of Expert's career has been spent developing unique packaging for nuclear waste applications, specifically for the Department of Energy. He has been the project leader on the development of a high-integrity container, as well as transuranic, mixed waste, environmental vaults, composite LSA boxes, and other custom-type packaging.
Expert invented several patented closure devices, including encapsulation means, screw tops, and key locks. A majority of his career has been involved in designs of containers and unique, state-of-the-art closures.
A majority of Expert's career has been involved in designing and developing secondary containment equipment for hazardous materials containers and tanks. The need for secondary containment in the environmental field is fairly recent. He is recognized as one of the pioneers in educating the marketplace on secondary containment and its regulations. The primary, applicable regulations for secondary containment are enforced by the EPA, and the guidelines are drafted by the Uniform Fire Code. He has written a trade journal article on the subject, and has been involved in consulting and design work for companies seeking new secondary containment products.
