The dictates of increasing functional and efficacous product requirements have guided Expert into researching and developing alternate modalities for sterile manufacture. Amongst them are processes involving microwaves, UV, ultrasonics, supercritical extraction and E-beams, as well as techniques involving modified atmospheres, hurdles, and active packaging. Maintenance of seal integrity and its non-destructive monitoring has been a natural extension of these activities.
The need to protect workers from their work, and the work from the workers, has triggered the development of numerous technologies in modular, flexible, and portable biological barriers. The challenge of pre-sterilizing these isolators or bubbles and the maintenance of their sterility, while permitting transfers "in" and "out," have required Expert to focus on the development of several cold sterilization and contamination control technologies that have wide applicability in sterile manufacture of foods and drugs.
While ionizing radiation like gamma, and more recently E-beams, have held the attention for sterilization and pasteurization in the food, pharmaceutical, and device industries, the use of non-ionizing energies like UV, ultrasonics, pulse power, and microwaves have shown great promise. Expert is well-versed in the ethylene oxide sterilization of food spices and medical devices; peracetic acid and/or hydrogen peroxide sterilization of isolators, enclosures, and surfaces; ozone sterilization of water; membrane filter sterilization of fruit juices and labile drugs; and UV and ultrasonic sterilization processes. His expertise also includes plasma, H2O2, and PAA sterilization of reusable medical devices such as "scopes."
