Most of his metallurgical practice and experience since 1985 has been with steel and other iron based metal products. His limited exposure to other metal products such as aluminum and titanium, etc, would be sufficient to provide basic information about characteristics and other general information. His ferrous metallurgy experience includes many hours of laboratory evaluation of steel products, ranging from very mild structural steels to fully hardened tool steel. Many more hours have been spent in consultation with engineering staff from all facets of manufacturing who generally require application assistance to "match up" the correct steel with a particular application.
Correct steel selection is of primary concern in the design phase of any engineered product. Steel is one of the most versatile materials known to man, and as such, a huge variety of grades and conditions are available to engineers and manufacturers. The proper selection of a steel or cast iron grade will help ensure the success of an otherwise well engineered product. He works with engineering staff daily and am able to consult on many steel topics, including welding and heat treatment.
Steel is the primary building block of the industrialized world. The proper application of steel is of paramount importance as energy prices continue to drive durable goods prices higher and higher. He specializes in steel application assistance, including the "real world" knowledge of what grades are truly available in the marketplace.
