Static Research and Consulting - Electrostatic Hazards, ESD in Electronic Manufacture
ID: 723246
United Kingdom
Expert has been involved in electrostatic discharge work since 1987. Between 1987 and 1994 he worked in contract research on electrostatic discharge measurements in ignition of pyrotechnic materials. As part of this work he completed his PhD thesis on the ignition of sensitive materials by low energy electrical discharges. He has since further developed his expertise in ESD measurements designing new probes for measurement of electrostatic discharges for evaluation of risks in electronics industry damage and explosion hazards avoidance.
Expert has also extensive experience in developing new electrostatic applications, such as electrostatic separation. While working with ERA Technology Ltd in the mid 1990's, the expert designed prototypes of several new electrostatic separators tailored for specific waste streams as part of the CEC funded ELREC electrostatic recycling project.
Expert's expertise in electrostatic discharge ignition has found application in test and measurement and advisory services for electrostatic hazards avoidance in many process industry areas where flammable atmospheres such as solvents and dust clouds may be found. Other electrostatic hazards include nuisance shocks to personnel in the working environment such as offices or factories. Expert is on the BSI, CENELEC and IEC Committees developing standards and guidance for avoidance of electrostatic hazards such as CLC/TR50404 "Electrostatics - code of practice for the avoidance of hazards due to static electricity".
After training in electronics design and several years spent in electronics industry R&D, Expert joined the Electrostatic Research Group at Southampton University and moved into electrostatics R&D and consultancy. He has since spent his career giving specialist electrostatics research, consultancy and training services. In 1998 he set up his own company to provide these services to wider industry.
