Stainless Steels, Nickel Alloys, Corrosion, Materials Selection, Welding, High Temp Alloys
ID: 730914
Canada
He has worked primarily in the following end-use industries: Chemical process, pharmaceutical, fertilizer, food and beverage, energy production including flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment, alternative energy production, pulp and paper, potable water/waste water, desalination and mining/metallurgical. Often failure analysis is a tool to use if a material has failed, especially if the reason is not obvious.
Expert has worked over 23 years with one of the major European stainless steel producers, mostly in Canada but also 5½ years in Sweden including one year at their R&D facility. The major emphasis was on special stainless steel alloys, but he also was involved with nickel alloys and titanium. His expertize is in the field of corrosion and materials selection, but is of a highly practical nature which includes the fabrication and welding of alloys and how to avoid detrimental effects on the metal’s corrosion resistance. He was also involved with high temperature alloys and applications. Later, the expert was the Technical Director of a well-known not-for-profit industry association for 10 years, involved with writing technical publications and articles, training of engineers, solving corrosion problems, leading projects and directing other consultants. He has held training seminars internationally on the subject of selection and proper use of stainless steels and nickel alloys. He has made presentations at industy events on the many families of Duplex Stainless Steels, the 6%Mo and 7%Mo SS grades. He has a special interest in the history of stainless steels and nickel alloys.
Expert's expertize is in the field of corrosion and materials selection, and is of a highly practical nature which includes the fabrication and welding of alloys and how to avoid detrimental effects on the metal’s corrosion resistance. Post-weld cleaning is a final step that many people miss. The major emphasis was on special stainless steel alloys (the families of duplex SS and the 6%Mo grades), but he was also involved with nickel alloys and titanium. He has given numerous training sessions internationally on stainless steel and nickel alloy corrosion and how to select the proper alloy.

The proper welding of stainless steel and nickel alloys is in most applications the key step to ensuring the expected corrosion resistance. It starts with selecting the appropriate filler metal and welding process. This is especially important for the various families of duplex stainless steel, as well as the high alloyed alloys such as 904L, 6%Mo grades, and nickel alloys.
This final and often neglected step in fabrication is especially important for the higher alloyed stainless steels. Much confusion exists about what it means to passivate or pickle these materials. It is important to select an effective and cost-effective process with will give the expected results in long term life of the equipment.
