Expert is a board certified ophthalmologist, whose practice has been limited to refractive surgery since 1993. He has performed over 40,000 refractive surgical procedures, including over 6,000 radial keratotomy (RK) surgeries, 10,000 photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) surgeries, and over 30,000 LASIK surgeries. He was the first surgeon in Northern California to offer the Visx excimer laser, in March of 1996. He was the first surgeon to perform a wavefront guided LASIK surgery in Northern California, in 2002, and was the second in Northern California to perform blade-free LASIK. He trained at Yale University as an undergraduate, and did his medical training at the UCLA School of Medicine, and his ophthalmology residency at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute. He has been performing phakic IOL surgery with the Verisyse implant since 2005, and currently offers the Visian ICL as a phakic IOL. He's been using Intacs corneal implants for keratoconus and ectasia since 2005. Expert has vast experience using the following excimer laser platforms: Visx Star, Alcon LADARVision, Nidek EC-5000, Bausch & Lomb 217z, and Allegretto Eye-Q Wavelight. He has experience with most microkeratomes, including the Chiron ACS, Summit, Amadeus, Nidek, and B&L, as well as with the IntraLase femtosecond laser keratome.
He has served as an expert witness for numerous refractive surgery malpractice cases, both on the plaintiffs' side as well as the defense. He has been a clinical investigator in numerous FDA studies related to various excimer lasers in the 1990s.
Expert has been the team ophthalmologist for the Oakland Raiders since 1999, and over the past several years has served on and off as the team LASIK surgeon for the Oakland A's, the San Jose Sharks, the San Jose Sabercats, the LA Dodgers, the LA Galaxy, the LA Kings and the San Diego Padres.
