Expert's expertise includes the development and construction of a commercial process for manufacturing >1000 ohm cm P-type silicon to replace an original zinc reduction 200-400 ohm cm silicon process. This work required solving problems in high-voltage (>50 Kvolts) processing in a vacuum, radio frequency heating, float zone refining, silane purification, and hydrogen handling.
Expert spent a considerable amount of his career in the manufacture of metal (and alloys) sheet via a rolling mill. This work required developing scheduling for mill configuration (2 Hi, 4 Hi, single cluster, etc.), work roll crown calculation, mill loading, % thickness reduction, and annealing to produce high (>90%) yields of refractory metals (alloys) which could not be economically recycled. Early Fortran 4 programming was applied in the above calculations.
Expert is well-versed in solving problems in reaction kinetics, yield improvement, ingredient cost reduction, new product development, process improvement, distillation, and filtration. The application of these thermodynamics, kinetics, and chemical unit operations was critical to the success of the program.
A large fraction of Expert's career has focused upon the processing of iron chloride as well its production, isolation, and purification. He is very knowledgeable regarding both ferric chloride and ferrous chloride, with an emphasis on the former. With regard to ferrous chloride, he is especially conversant with the anhydrous form. Initially, his work involved the economical recovery of chlorine. The early application of Fortran 4 to the thermodynamics, kinetic analyis, and process data reduction was a significant factor in this program.
A portion of Expert's career involved applying "liquid flow through porous media" unit operations to the problem of enhanced oil recovery. This work required developing analytical techniques, process flow control, and pressurized laboratory facilities.
