Expert (pronounced 'Yovitsa Millanovich') has been actively involved in research for the last 12 years, which is documented by a constant stream of research papers published in international journals and proceedings of international conferences. His work in the area of transients and modelling of synchronous machines was mainly in torsional oscillations and saturation modelling. The emphasis of his latest research in this area is on the machine steady–state and transient behaviour in the presence of uncertainties associated with model parameters and operating conditions.

In the area of power system dynamics, Expert’s research was initially in the explanation of dynamic load-system interaction and assessing the influence of dynamic loads on system stability. He has developed a new technique for ranking loads in the power system based on their influence on system stability. He has pioneered this research and his papers are cited in journal and conference articles and Ph.D. and M.Sc. dissertations by other researchers working in this area. The latest work in the area of power system dynamics concentrates on the robust stability of uncertain de-regulated systems with embedded generators and coordinated tuning of power system controllers. This is particularly important for de-regulated power systems with increased penetration of embedded generation where competition increases the uncertainty that network operators must face and encourages them to operate with smaller security margins. He is also working on the application of the latest control theory methods for robust control in power system stability studies. A research project proposal in this area is in final stage of development.

Power quality has become one of the most important fields of research in recent years. Expert’s involvement in this area began in mid-1996 at the University of Tasmania. There, he was the driving force behind the establishment of one of the first Centres for Power Quality research in Australia. His research there was strongly supported by the Tasmanian Electric Power Utility, major Tasmanian industries and the Australian Research Council. In less than two years there, he managed to secure research funding of about $580,000. He is currently working in the area of voltage sag assessment and characterising in distribution systems and in harmonic load modelling. Two large project proposals have been recently submitted to the EPSRC and EU for the work in this area. Expert is also involved as a British Specialist in power quality in a three-year collaborative project with NgeeAnn Polytechnic from Singapore funded by the British Council.
