Expert Details
Polymer Fiber Based Materials; Patent Litigation
ID: 721698
South Carolina, USA
His areas of expertise include advanced materials, such as high-performance polymers and environmentally responsive ("smart") materials.
His expertise is founded on over 30 years' research and teaching experience in all of these areas. He has studied the physics of fiber formation, primarily by melt spinning, in his laboratory and has taught graduate level courses on the subject. In addition, he has performed or overseen the testing of fiber properties, and has extensive experience in this area. Synthetic fiber production and utilization has been the main thrust of his professional life for over 30 years. A large component of this topic includes the influence of process parameters on fiber properties, in which expert has extensive experience. This area is closely aligned with the above areas.
Expert possesses extensive research experience in natural fibers, primarily cotton, wool, and silk, but also ramie, flax, hemp and other plant-based fibers. His expertise extends to modifications of these materials. He has broad experience in silks, extending beyond silk-worm silk to spider silk. In his spider silk research, he has done work in biomimetics and in genetically modified proteins. Expert has active research in the area of biologically-based (protein) materials science. The essential area of biocompatibility, the interactions of materials with biological systems, is included in this area.
Expert has worked with all manner of fibrous materials, including the standard fabric structures (woven, knitted, braided) and nonwoven materials and coated fabrics. His expertise extends to analyzing the properties of these fibrous materials, including filtration efficiency.
For product service liability consulting, he can provide reports based on laboratory testing, extant literature searches, and analysis of patents and other documents. In the area of patents, his experience includes expert support for patent infringement litigation and patent validity/invalidity cases. Expert has legal consulting experience that includes personal injury, liability and product serviceability, as relate to his expertise in polymer fiber and fiber-based materials.
He maintains access to the testing laboratories at Clemson University (those services are billed separately) as an emeritus professor and a research professor; he directly oversees the testing and provides expert interpretation of the data obtained in the tests. In Expert's prior litigation experience, he has been deposed and served as an expert witness at trial.
Expert has been an independent consult since 2005. Examples of his extensive litigation experience are provided above.
