New ways to use major waste products in the carpet and tire industry!!

Plastic material analysis, including chemical and physical analysis, has been part of Expert's 36 years in the plastic industry. Firsthand working knowledge of the tools used in the trade, and their limitations, is a skill set he provides. He can advise on what tools to use and how to use them for determining failure analysis. These skills are integrated into his analytical abilities and broad-based knowledge of resins and other agents used in the field. He has a working knowledge of analytical techniques which include MS, GC-MS, and LC-MS; HPLC; TGAMS; FTIR and UV spectral analysis; ion chromatography; ICP:AES and furnace AA; proton, carbon, and phosphorus NMR; high-pressure extraction techniques; method development; wet chemical analysis; and LC, GC, and related techniques; all used for forensic and non-forensic identification and reverse engineering of plastics and coatings, and their related problems in the field.

Expert notes that in the plastics field, reverse engineering and problem solving techniques are absolutely necessary for today’s competitive advantage. Knowing what a plastic contains helps direct solutions to problems. Not all plastics respond the same to extraction techniques and reference standards are not available in all cases. It takes years of hands-on experience to sort through the evidence and expedite the analysis. He has established, over the last 30 years, a vast library of data on additives and techniques to sort through each. He currently works on plastics, adhesives, glues, coatings, and fabricated samples to determine cause of failure and to provide solutions to insurance claims and to provide alternatives. Expert also notes that chemical analysis pertaining to plastics and coatings relates to extraction and isolation techniques needed to prepare the samples for analysis. Knowing what techniques to use avoids repeat analysis. He is knowledgeable of over 500 chemical techniques in the plastics industry and routinely uses them to solve today’s problems. Heavy metal analysis by ICP:AES, furnace AA techniques, ion chromatography and EPA extraction techniques for TCLP levels in plastic waste are done routinely. Expert also notes that HPLC and other chromatographic techniques are used routinely for polymer analysis to identify materials including dyes, colorants, additives, and transformation products in plastics. He uses HPLC routinely for reverse engineering of fabricated plastic parts. He notes that composition analysis and competitive intelligence, product development, and chemical analysis go hand in hand. Reverse engineering of a plastic to determine its composition and to identify the structures of each complex additive the polymer contains is something Expert does routinely for the plastics and coatings industry in the areas of fibers, films, injection molding, and rotomolding, as applied to the markets of the auto industry, the agricultural industry, containers, textiles, and others. Material analysis of the physical and chemical properties of plastics is something Expert has done for over 25 years using ASTM and DIN testing techniques. These include Instron capillary rheometry, mechanical spectra, rheology testing, tensile testing, Izod and heat distortion testing, and so on. These techniques are used to determine failure modes and causes of failure in plastics and in breakdown of coatings.

Recently developed new analytical methods and procedures to run REACH compliance problems with exports into Europe. We are now routinely running ALL Bay Proton and VOC HAPS analysis for the tire industry and their napthenlic oils for impurities as per REACH regulations and EPA regulations. All related testing and quantification for PAH testing of rubber tire materials and composites being done routinely.

Expert notes that patent law and recognizing when to get a patent or trade secret and how to accomplish this task are the keys to success in both the coatings and plastic industry. He has a strong record in patent law, patent writing, and getting around existing patents. He has multiple patents in the field of plastics, coatings, and waxes in diverse areas of expertise. He has written a provisional patent for the use of new military frangible ballistics, which involves extrusion and fabrication of metal powder composites. His skills in patent law are used to provide product and R&D fields the tools to recognize when to put money into this field and how to protect themselves broadly and dimensionally. He works with patent attorneys to write, file, and bring a working strategy together. Plastics intellectual property has been a main part of Expert's focus in every endeavor over the last 35 years and this is reflective in the number of issued patents in his name.

He knows when to identify a patent and how to file and write one that has multiple dimensions. He does provisional patents, consults on many patent issues, interprets the claims for others, and writes technical positions. He notes that knowing how to get around the holes in poorly-written patents is a competitive advantage and knowing when to write one that provides a return on the investment is something that is very novel today. The cost of doing a patent must be balanced with the return on the investment and its maintenance fee.

In 2008 filed three new patents on recycled rubbers for new applications. Filed non-provisional patent in 2009 on Odor Mediation of Recycled Tire Rubber that broadens our knowledge in the field of odor mediation of plastics.

Expert notes that knowledge of resin miscibility and compatibility in his industry is key to designing new alloys or blends. Mathematics of blending chemistry and knowing what resins are suitable for carrier masterbatches or downstream use helps to avoid major cost problems in the field. Chemical incompatibility and interactions with additive systems and chemical breakdown of select resins is key, and his knowledge of the mechanisms of transformation and breakdown of polymers is crucial in the selection process. He also notes that knowledge of and access to information about all physical and chemical properties of all the key resins and the exotics is critical. He brings 36 years of skills together in all facets of this industry to make the key judgment of how to produce a new alloy or blend and if it will be successful in the market. This includes his access to downstream users and molders and fabricators in the industry.

Expert notes that durability and design of all plastics requires knowledge of the chemistry of the plastic and its limitations in processing, fabrication, chemical breakdown, and chemical interactions with additives used to process or stabilize the end product. UV, long term thermo-oxidative, processing stabilization, or additive systems to enhance processing of any resin at significantly lower temperatures and saving energy and money is in his skill set. He has firsthand knowledge and experience in designing stabilization systems to avoid the common mistakes made today by less knowledgeable people coming into this industry. This can save a client hundreds of thousands of dollars if a mistake is made without the common-sense knowledge to avoid certain additives and agents used in making a plastic durable.
