Dr. J. Expert's expertise lies in breeding cucurbit crops, including melon, squash, and pumpkin. He has developed popular early varieties of melon for northern latitudes which are widely used by commercial growers, bush strains of Cucurbita maxima, and high yielding, bush strains of edible (hull-less) seeded pumpkins (Cucurbita pepo) that will allow commercial expansion of the snackseed trade.

Expert has developed near infrared transmitting mulch film that heats the soil more effectively than traditional black polyethylene film. This technology has been licensed for commercial use. In collaboration with Dr. Otho S. Wells, Expert has tested and designed rowcover systems for modifying the microenvironment for intensive crop production. Much of this technology has been commercialized.
