He has over 30 years of experience in developing detectors for particle and nuclear physics experiments. His expertise includes the design and fabrication of gas-filled counters, scintillation counters, and Cherenkov detectors as well as solid-state tracking systems. He has designed numerous electronic readout systems and has a broad knowledge of electronics, ranging from individual devices, through integrated circuits (ADC's, DAC's, FPGAs), to complex systems.

Expert is an expert on the interaction of radiation with matter and is proficient in the use of codes that are expressly designed to simulate the interaction of radiation with matter (useful, for example, to estimate the effectiveness of shielding). More generally, he is "fluent" in numerous computer languages, including FORTRAN, C, C++ and Java and has a working knowledge of several others.

Expert is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has served on numerous grant selection and scientific advisory panels.
