Expert has developed, scaled-up, and commercialized such large-scale processes as trichlorobenzene manufacturing from lindane wastes and chlorinated olefins by a combined reaction-distillation process. These processes were developed in his group "from scratch." He took part in the commissioning of these processes and supervised their operation for a number of years. He developed and tested, on a pilot plant scale, the process of Valexon (organophosphorus pesticide) manufacturing. He developed a process of mercaptoacetic acid production and produced it on a pilot plant scale. He notes that mercaptoacetic acid is a reagent for permanent wave compositions.
The primary focus of Expert's scientific interest is in phase-transfer catalysis (PTC), which makes it possible to carry out the reaction between reactants (usually an inorganic one and organic substrates) that exist in two immiscible phases without the need to resort to the help of a homogenizing solvent. The catalyst is usually a quaternary ammonium compound. He has developed, scaled up, and commercialized two-large-scale PTC-based processes. He has developed and tested on a pilot plant scale two other PTC-based processes. In addition, Expert has developed a PTC-based process for a large US chemical company. He has more than a dozen Russian patents on PTC and about 60 publications in various magazines. He has read a number of lectures on PTC, its mechanism and its industrial applications on various international conferences.
Expert designed reactor units for reactive distillation and trichlorobenzene production based on pilot plant and lab trials.
As a Technical Director of the Chordip, Ltd. Moscow office, Expert supervised a number of R&D projects on halogenated heterocycles, boronic acids, and pharma intermediates.
Expert has carried out research in the field of phase-transfer catalysis mechanism.
Expert designed reactor units for manufacturing chlorinated olefins by reactive distillation, and trichlorobenzene by phase-transfer catalyzed dehydrochlorination.
As a Deputy Head of the laboratory in the organochlorine chemicals department of the State R&D Institute of Chlorine Industry, Expert supervised a number of R&D projects on the production of organochlorine products.
Expert developed and scaled up a number of processes, such as vitamin A production, chlorinated olefins, trichlorobenzene, and organophosphorus pesticide.
As a Technical Director of the Chordip Moscow office, Expert supervised Chordip's Novomoscovsk fine chemical plant and managed the contract production.
Expert carried out a joint research with the School of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Surrey (UK) in the framework of the 5th Framework Program of the European Union.
Expert has often consulted the management of a number of Russian and USSR chemical plants on problems with debottlenecking of various processes. These plants include the Sterlitamak "Kaustik" plant, the Chapayevsk Chemical Plant, the Belgorod Vitamin Plant, and the Sumgait (Azerbaijan), Volgograd, and Kalush (Ukraine) "Khimprom" chemical plants.
