ORGANIC COATINGS. Most of his career has been devoted to organic coatings technology. His main expertise is in the polymeric binders of coatings, acrylics, polyesters, alkyds, epoxies, polyurethanes, and melamine formaldehyde resins. Having co-authored a book on coatings science and technology (4th Ed. John Wiley, 2017), his expertise spans most parts of the subject. He is experienced with technical/legal issues, especially with patents.
COATING RAW MATERIAL. Expert consults on most aspects of organic coatings, especially on polymeric binders. He is experienced in product development, licensing, technology assessment and new opportunity indentification. He is also familiar with raw materials suppliers to the coatings industry, coatings producers, and coatings users.
REACTIVE POLYMER; HIGH SOLIDS ORGANIC COATINGS. Much of his research has been heavily involved with reactive polymers of the types used in coatings and high solids and powder organic coatings.
POLYMER CHEMISTRY. Expert has a broad background in polymer chemistry. He has detailed knowledge of many aspects of polymer chemistry and has an appreciation of the rest.
LITIGATION SUPPORT. He has recent experience in product liability and intellectual property litigation involving coatings. Details upon request.
Expert's research led to improved understanding of abrasion and mar resistance (over a dozen publications) and assisted in practical improvements such as better mar resistant automotive coatings and improved scratch-resistant hard coatings for polycarbonate.
Expert has had first-hand experience with acrylic coatings for about 30 years. Expert has made research contributions to clear coatings for automotive use.
Expert has had first-hand experience with all the major categories of coatings and has published research and/or obtained patents on most of them. As a "coatings generalist" he can offer perspective on the selection of coatings for most end uses.
He is widely known for his published research in low-solvent coatings, especially on high-solids and solvent-free coatings. He has been active in this area almost since 1967, when air pollution regulation of coatings first began to take effect.
He has recent experience in litigation support for product liability and intellectual property disputes in the field of coatings.
Expert has consulted with a variety of companies, some on contracts lasting as long as ten years and others on a one-day basis to address a specific problem. He has successfully served as expert on intellectual property and product liability litigation.
