Oxford where he obtained a PhD in metabolic biochemistry in 1987. Moving to link signal transduction with metabolism, he took up a postdoctoral position with
Prof. Donal Walsh in the University of California, Davis, USA in the Department of Biological Chemistry, where he worked on the regulation of protein kinases
associated with glycogen mobilization in liver and muscle. He then obtained an independently funded MRC (Medical Research Council) training Fellowship which
he used to work with Prof. Nick Hales in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, University of Cambridge, UK, where he received training in cell and molecular
diabetes research, from 1990 to 1992. He moved to UCD Dublin in 1993 to take up a lectureship in Biochemistry, where he set up a pancreatic beta cell research
group and became responsible for the teaching of biochemistry to medical students. He received promotion to Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry in 2002 and
Associate Professor in 2007. Since his appointment to UCD, this expert has published approximately 50 research papers and reviews and has received
approximately 1.8 million Euro in Grant funding as Lead Applicant as well as approximately 1.5 million Euro as a Co-Applicant. This expert now leads a team of
researchers working on aspects of nutrient, immune and endocrine regulation of pancreatic beta cell function and integrity and has also collaborated with
colleagues in the pharmaceutical industry.
