Process Development, Commercialization, Scale-Up; Separation and Purification - Filtration, Activated Carbon
ID: 732014
Delaware, USA
Selected Accomplishments:
- As an Operations Manager for Amoco Performance Products’ Carbon Fiber Pre-preg Business Segment, Expert championed the formation and subsequent creation of a new multifunction Business Team to manage all aspects of this new business venture.
- As Manufacturing Manager for Amoco BioProducts Corporation, Expert set up a network of toll manufacturers to allow the manufacture of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 for the poultry market, sparing Amoco the need to make capital investments in a new business.
- As a senior executive at Gelman Sciences (later acquired by Pall Corporation), Expert took a small 9-person R/D group, and expanded/reorganized it into a 29-person, high productivity organization which developed new membranes lines for diagnostic testing and protein differentiation.
- As an executive with Graver Technologies, Expert spearheaded the acquisition of three companies: a small industrial filter group ($300K incremental revenues), the water filtration business Whatman Corporation ($3MM incremental revenues), and a start-up business developing a new media for arsenic removal from water (potentially $1MM in incremental revenue).
In 2014, Expert formed Process Industries Consultants, Inc., an “S” Corporation providing expertise in the chemical process and materials industries. Expert has been retained by clients to provide input for filtration issues, activated carbon technology, carbon block costing, reaction engineering, formulated products, and separations/purification. He has also developed successful foundation grant requests for Delaware non-profits.
Expert was on the Board of a nanotech start-up: 42TEK, based in Spain, which has novel technology for the manufacture of nanoparticle TiO2 for photocatalysis applications. In this capacity, Expert presented to venture capital organizations to raise funding for expansion.
Expert is working closely with, and supporting technology development for such start-ups as Crystal Clear Technologies (the removal of ppb levels of selenium from water); Sunthetics (electrically-based chemical reactions); QuatCare (novel antimicrobial treatment for wastewater and cooling towers), Allied Microbiota (novel bacteria for brownfield remediation).
In addition, Expert mentors “sustainable” start-up companies as an Entrepreneur in Residence with NYSERDA – New York State Energy R/D Authority, and with the CleanTech Open organization, which sponsors the development of Green technologies throughout the world.
Expert held a Research Fellow position at Rochester Institute of Technology’s Chemistry Department.
Expert holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. His expertise is in real-world, industrial product/process commercialization and optimization. He has devoted his career to taking initial, developmental quantities of new materials and organizing the necessary process steps to create commercial quantities of the material/products at target costs and to also optimize existing processes.
Developed new products in a variety of arenas: specialty chemicals, carbon fiber advanced composites, biotech-based Nutritionals, membrane formation for filtration media, ion exchange and carbon-based purification, formulated products used in floor finishes, commercial fryer cleaning, and boiler/cooling tower feed water treatments. Expert can leverage the lessons learned in one technology with the needs of seemingly different process industries. Can transition from conceptualization to practical implementation, and get Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, and R/D to actually talk to each other.
As a senior R/D executive in both large and small companies, expert has been involved in the decision-making processes that go into the creation of new product/process strategies. He has seen successes and failures and has a unique perspective in the aspects of real-life organizational issues and their consequences.
Managed both QC and Environmental/Health/Safety organizations, and have first-hand knowledge of the Regulatory and Quality hurdles/pitfalls new products/processes must sustain EPA Waste Management, Hazardous emissions, RCRA, SARA Title III, Site Plans and Reporting requirements, along with ISO - 9001 and the new Global Harmonization hazard communication requirements.
Lastly, he has supported Merger and Acquisition activities, bringing new companies and technologies to my acquiring organizations, in addition to working with outside, overseas organizations to acquire their novel technologies.
Expert has functioned as an expert witness in two cases: in a legionella fatality lawsuit where he was an expert witness evaluating the efficacy of the water filtration and biocide protocols used by the plaintiff; he is currently involved in a second case where his client is being accused of violating an NDA and infringing on the covered technology.
Expert is being considered for a third case where a product was illegally shipped to a location and there is a lawsuit over the projected recall.
Expert functioned as Senior Product Manager for an advanced composites business. He set up an Operations Team responsible for business gross margins and day-to-day tactical performance of the business. He also functioned as a Manufacturing Manager for a start-up biotechnology business, where duties were to set up tolling operations across the US to manufacture a synthetic vitamin.
