MEDICAL TEXTILES; SUTURES. Expert has studied the mechanical and physical performance of surgical sutures and of the knots tied in them. He has developed a knot tying device that can be used to construct knots under controlled conditions of tension and number of throws. Expert has examined the behaviors of sutures of a variety of sizes and types and under both in vitro and in vivo environments. His current research in sutures is directed at enhancing knot performance by coupling mechanical interlacing with energy from a laser beam.
ARTERIAL GRAFTS. Another medical textile area in which Expert has pursued work is arterial grafts. His interests have lied in characterizing the surface, mechanical and permeability behaviors of grafts, studying changes in properties with time in the body and the clinical history of the patient, and determining structures that promote healing. Expert developed an enzymatic method for removing tissues from formalin-fixed grafts without affecting graft fiber. This allows a researcher to determine what changes, if any, have occurred in the graft fiber while in the body. This method is now widely used in research laboratories.
FABRIC SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS; YARN SURFACE PROPERTY. Expert has studied friction behavior of fibers, yarns, and fabrics. He has examined the same properties also in human hair and surgical sutures. He developed test methods for characterizing this property in fibers and fibrous assemblies in both dry and fluid environments. He is credited with a structural model that explains the factors affecting this property in textile materials.
TEXTILE FIBERS & PROPERTIES. Expert has studied the mechanical, rheological, surface, and morphological properties of a wide variety of materials, including natural and man-made fibers, and yarns, woven fabrics and non-woven fabrics. He has taught and continues to teach graduate courses in this area and has directed research which emphasized measurement, modeling, and prediction of their properties.
