Expert is a 15 year veteran of the mobile industry. During the prior three and a half years, Expert was entrusted with the monetization of Blackberry’s foundational patent portfolio, one of largest patent portfolios in the world. In doing so, Expert led all aspects of BlackBerry’s IP prosecution, licensing, IP venturing, acquisitions and divestitures, litigation strategy, technology research and global technology standardization activities.
Expert joined Blackberry in mid-2014 and quickly established and launched Blackberry’s IP monetization, divestiture and IP venturing programs, building a high-performing, world-class licensing organization which accomplished a number of ‘firsts’ for Blackberry including ranking in the Top 25 Globally in IP licensing revenue within the first 18 months of the groups existence. Expert’ team achieved in two years what it took Interdigital to do in four years, Ericsson to do in seven years and Acacia to do in 10 years. For this, Expert was promoted to Senior Vice President of Intellectual Property, Licensing and Standards within 15 months of joining BlackBerry.
Prior to Blackberry, Expert held the position of Vice President of Corporate Development and Intellectual Property Licensing at Intertrust where he led all North American and European IP licensing and Corporate Development activities. Expert either advised on or was a member of the management team of five Intertrust portfolio companies including Personagraph (a privacy-based user understanding platform for mobile targeting and customer engagement), Cryptanium (a tamper resistance and whitebox cryptography provider), SeaCert (a trust services provider and certificate authority), SUMO (a secure automotive telematics and data visualization company) and GeneCloud (a wholly distributed private genomic and proteomic digital experimentation platform).
Before joining Intertrust, Expert held a series of senior engineering, corporate strategy and IP related positions at Nokia Research Center, Sony Ericsson's Corporate Technology Office and HTC's Corporate Strategy Group. Expert is an inventor on six issued US and international patents, has co-authored several additional international patent applications and has published over 20 academic articles on various research topics. Expert regularly speaks at international IP functions such as IP Dealmakers, IPBC as well as various PE and academic events. Expert' academic interests include source compression, joint source channel coding, information theory, secure data transport and storage, resource-constrained platform security, trusted distributed systems, machine learning algorithms and platform virtualization technologies.
Expert was selected by IAM as one of the top 300 IP licensing professionals in the world and was featured in the IAM North American Top 40. Within the last four years, Expert was selected as the 4th most influential IP professional in the world according to IAM Magazine and his team’s performance was highlighted in IAM’s end of year issue. In June 201x, IAM published an editorial on Expert and his current company's team. Expert holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University (2002) and a M.S. (1997) and B.S. (1995, Summa Cum Laude) in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University.

Stood up multiple licensing programs and external IP ventures, orchestrated deals with major licensees across the automotive, infrastructure, gambling/gaming, consumer electronics, IoT, enterprise software and mobile/Android device verticals. Launched multiple international litigations and arbitrations, achieved the first royalty bearing licenses in BlackBerry’s history, and launched an external-facing IP services business catering to the diverse needs of its paying clients across multiple vertical segments. Built and managed a truly global team of 75+ IP professionals, lawyers, researchers, engineers, contractors and support staff across 11 sites in 7 countries. Brought to bear an extensive network of IP professionals, private equity partners, family funds and high net worth individuals to build a revered patent divestiture program which orchestrated perhaps the largest pure IP transaction globally on record in 2015. Was a member of the BTS division management team. |
