NUTRITION; SPORT AND CLINICAL NUTRITION. Expert has conducted pioneering research on sports nutrition. He has specialized in the metabolism of carbohydrates and fat during exercise as well as the benefits of fluid replacement during exercise.
CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM AND INGESTION. Much of Expert's research has focused on determining the best type and optimal amount of carbohydrates to eat before, during, and after exercise. He is knowledgeable about the ideal carbohydrate for sport nutrition products, such as sport drinks, energy bars, and whole foods.
FAT METABOLISM. Expert has recently investigated the factors which regulate the amount and type of body fat metabolized in response to eating and exercise. He is also knowledgeable about long chain and medium chain triglyceride metabolism, which is relevant to diet and exercise programs designed to lose body fat. Expert is using stable isotope technology for this research.
FLUID CONSUMPTION; SPORT BEVERAGES. Expert has determined the beneficial effects of fluid ingestion during exercise to off-set dehydration. He has focused on the cardiovascular factors that prevent people from overheating during exercise and that improve their work performance. He has been instrumental in developing ingredients for sport drinks.
REHYDRATION. Expert is knowledgeable regarding the required composition of beverages that restore lost body fluids and electrolytes. He specializes in fluid lost through sweating. He has determined the role of adding carbohydrates to these beverages either for taste or to restore bodily glycogen stores.
HUMAN ENVIRONMENTAL PHYSIOLOGY. Cardiovascular and metabolic responses to exercise are modified by the environment. Expert has studied the influence of altering ambient temperature, with a focus on fluid replacement and endurance performance ability.
SPORTS MEDICINE. Expert is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Sports Medicine. In this capacity and through his research, he keeps informed about the most recent medical advances that have potential to influence sports performances. Expert works closely with the US Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee.
PHYSICAL FITNESS. Expert's research specializes in the physiological factors which limit human endurance and strength/power performance. Expert is expert in developing exercise training programs designed to improve physiological function and human physical performance. He advises many athletes at the University of Texas, as well as some professional athletes.
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM. Expert is knowledgeable about the cardiovascular responses to exercise; particularly the responses of the heart, arteries, veins, and autonomic nervous system. These are the important factors which determine blood flow throughout the body in response to exercise, heat stress, and cold exposure.
