For 20 years, expert has been involved in studying the effects of radiowaves and 60Hz on people. His work has included participation in a major epidemiological study that showed a correlation between the proximity of power lines and the incidence of childhood cancer, as well as the development of new theories for the possible mechanism by which low fields can induce changes in biological systems. Most recently, he has been looking at ways to reduce magnetic fields from wiring, distribution lines, and transformers.

For 30 years, he has been involved in the design of new electron devices, including masers, lasers, low-noise avalanche photodiodes, flash lamps, optical parametric amplifiers, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) recording systems, HTS microwave phase shifters, an acoustic drill for breaking up kidney stones, and fiber optics for optical recording.

Being the first to demonstrate the use of lasers for microsurgery in embryology in 1962, he is fluent in the applications of electromagnetic waves to biological systems. He has a solid understanding of the physics of laser interactions with biological materials. And, more recently, he has been involved in the development of fiber optics tips.

He has a substantial background in the administration of engineering education. He spent 17 years as an ECE Department Chairman, founding new programs in telecommunications and two branch campus departments. He was a member of the ABET Board of Directors for 6 years, and spent 5 years as Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Education. Additionally, he has taught a wide range of courses from sophomore circuits, electronics, and field theory to a graduate-level course on optical electronics and optical design. He currently has projects underway on a voltage-tunable microwave phase shifter and physiological measurements of eye fatigue.
