Expert has developed and applied many of the findings of his research within the field of sustainable landscapes to practical applied design outcomes. His published articles focus on the role of applied ecology within the urban landscape, analyzing the potential for a more ecologically inspired approach to the designed urban landscape form. This ranges in scope from green roof and living wall technologies, increasingly popular as a measure to counter carbon emissions and the heat island effect, to the renegotiation of designed fortuitous ecologies. His work into the landscapes of forgotten spaces and places inform his research into the objective for a more sustainable but accessible urban landscape form. Consequently the needs of the city/town dweller are a primary factor when considering the knock on effect of more progressive designed public spaces. The emotional well being of the city's inhabitants is an important marker to sustainability and as such Expert's work considers how the symbiotic relationship between nature and society can be effectively realized.
