Over the last 10 years, Expert's work has generally concerned the analysis of polymers and composites, seeking to solve problems based on an understanding of the fundamental materials science. This encompassed 4 years working on production, failure analysis and remediation of underwater systems subject to aggressive service conditions; much of this work focused on polyurethanes, adhesive bonding, and environmental durability. He then pursued studies for PhD, spending 3 years developing specialist fibreoptics and demonstrating their feasibilty for novel built in condition monitoring in composites. Working on a variety of materials systems, in different teams has allowed him to develop wide ranging experience in mechanical testing and thermal analysis, with due concern for the validity of the test. He is experienced in providing advice to other engineers in how best to approach the testing in order to obtain not only good raw data, but relevant to their line of enquiry.
