WATER QUALITY MODELING. Expert has developed and applied models for the range of water bodies listed above. He has significant experience with a variety of model types and solution schemes from simple analytical equations to complex numerical models (e.g., finite difference and finite element. Expert has modeled parameters including dissolved oxygen (simulating BOD, nutrification and eutrophication effects), temperature (thermal impacts from power plants), organic contaminants (including dioxin, PCBs, PAHs, and organic solvents), and heavy metals. He has managed the development of a dynamic model intended to be more realistic than simple models typically used for NPDES wasteload allocation studies. He has performed modeling studies for NPDES permitting wasteload allocation studies, environmental impact statements (EIS), and risk assessments.
GROUNDWATER MODELING. Expert developed the Horizontal Plane Source (HPS) model published in the journal Groundwater and used by ENSR and other consulting companies. He has performed several groundwater modeling studies for sites throughout the U.S. using HPS and other models. He specialized and wrote an encyclopedia chapter on modeling of contaminant fate and transport in groundwater. Expert has used modeling studies to determine exposure concentration for risk assessments, design, and optimization of groundwater remediation systems. Additionally, he has designed and evaluated groundwater investigation programs.
GROUNDWATER CLEANUP; GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION; IN-SITU GROUNDWATER TREATMENT. Expert has designed, performed, and managed projects focused on the development of optimized groundwater remediation systems. He has written papers and given presentations on the use of contaminant fate and transport analysis to optimize groundwater remediation. He has evaluated groundwater remediation techniques, including pump and treat, in-situ bioremediation, and in-situ chemical treatment.
ECOSYSTEM ASSESSMENT. Expert has performed and managed ecological modeling studies to evaluate power plant entrainment impacts on ichthyoplanton, zooplankton, and coral larvae. He designed and managed ecological risk assessment studies as part of NPDES permitting and hazardous waste investigation. He has also managed ecological impact analyses to evaluate effects of discharged contaminants, including heat, BOD, toxic organics, and metals.
ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATION; CLEAN WATER ACT. Expert has performed analysis and consulting on the Clean Water Act, particularly with respect to NPDES regulations. He has developed and consulted on innovative NPDES permitting strategies using dynamic modeling, fate and transport modeling, and site specific water quality standards. He has followed developments and given presentations on Clean Water Act reauthorization with respect to controversial issues affecting industry.
SEDIMENT MATERIAL; DREDGED MATERIAL. Expert has developed sediment chemical quality and bioassay study programs to characterize quality and to determine sediment disposal alternatives for dredge sites. He has designed monitoring programs to evaluate water quality and biological effects of dredging on contaminated sediments.
NON-POINT SOURCE POLLUTION ASSESSMENT. Expert managed the development and application of an impact analysis methodology to evaluate the water quality and aquatic ecology effects of atmospheric deposition of contaminants.
