Chemometrics, Data Interpretation, Statistics and Mining in Analytical Chemistry
ID: 728098
United Kingdom
Application areas include biology (e.g. metabolomics of humans and mice, microbiology), medical applications (e.g. TB analysis in breath, salival analysis in dentistry), pharmaceuticals (multivariate process control and chromatography), environmental asessment including safety, materials characterisation (plastics) and forensics etc. He has worked with numerous organisations including GlaxoSmithKline, Health and Safety Executive, Bookham, Sirius Technology, Darpa, Local Council in UK, IMass Spec Analysis (a forensic company), Triton Technoloogy (plastics analysis), International Environmental Monitoring Project, Draper Labs (US) among others.
His main expertise is the handling and analysis of complex multivariate data that can be obtained from automated instruments including most types of chromatography, mass spectrometry, nmr, various types of optical spectroscopy (IR and uv), thermal analysis, fluorescence. Over the past few years he has focussed on pattern recognition and signal processing.
He has given evidence in court including the UK High Court and Court of Appeal.
He has acted as expert witness in several cases involving the interpretation of mass spec data in contaminated bank notes in order to ascertain whether the defendants were involved in drug dealing. He has helped develop pattern recognition approaches in the area of SNP (single nucleotide pairing) working with an instrument manufacturer in order to advise on the potential of an automated instrument for genetic profiling. He has helped advise a telecomunications company involving deciding whether to purchase a patent on a method for optical deconvolution,He has advised a US government agency about the feasibility of a company that wished to apply for funds for start up in the area of chromatographic and spectral deconvolution. He has worked with a large pharmaceutical company to help develop software that could be used for on-line multivariate process monitoring.

Royal Society of Chemistry (fellow) Royal Statistical Society (fellow) Royal Society of Medicine (fellow) |
Professional Appointments |
---|
Various editorial boards. |
Awards / Recognition |
---|
RSC Theophilus Redwood lectureship (major award from the RSC) in 2006 Listed in various places such as Dictionary of International Biography and Marquis Whos Who in the World Numerous invitations to speak in conferences |
Publications and Patents Summary |
---|
He has around 350 publications, including 7 books (3 edited and 4 authors), and 154 refereed journal papers. |
Additional Experience
Expert Witness Experience |
---|
He has appeared in around 12 court cases, both criminal and civil, primarily for the prosecution, although he has once appeared as a defence witness. These include the High Court and Court of Appeal as well as county and crown courts and once a magistrate's court. This has involved in most cases producing detailed reports based on analysis and assessment of data. |
Training / Seminars |
---|
He has developed workshops and courses in chemometrics over many years. These have been of various kinds, help primarily in the UK, but also in Finland, India, Brazil, Iran, Russia. He has developed texts and software that assist in some of these courses and been involved in European funded work to develop workshops. |
Vendor Selection |
---|
Limited, but he is aware of most of the relevant companies in this area. He has put in a proposal with a SME for EU funding with one growing vendor. |
Marketing Experience |
---|
He has had dealings with many industries. Although his job is academic in basis, chemometrics primarily relates to processes as they get close to the market. He has worked with SMEs that have limited funding to drive projects as well as very large industries who are concerned with quality and profitability of products. |
Other Relevant Experience |
---|
He is a reasonably good hands-on programmer, experienced particularly in Matlab, but also many other environments, and so good at data assessment, and report writing. |
