Expert developed procedures and equipment for numerous plants to handle emergency shutdowns. When a chemical plant loses electricity, air, water, steam, or nitrogen; steps must be taken quickly to avoid loss of containment or worse. Loss of utilities is relatively common and must be considered in the design of facilities. Fail-safe systems must be in-place to permit safe shutdowns, automated systems must be provided to permit safe orderly shutdowns to be handled automatically or from a remote safe location. Flare systems must be designed to handle the anticipated capacity (which should be provable by process simulation). Potential causes for emergency shutdowns must be studied, minimized, accounted for and have special operating procedures in place and trained for as well.
Expert worked over 30 years for EI duPont, industry leader in chemical process safety. The majority of time and effort was devoted to activities to establish and maintain process safety in duPont chemical manufacturing plants domestically and internationally. With the passage of OSHA 1910, programs to insure industrial safety used by duPont were adopted as expected standards known now as PSM (Process Safety Management). Process Hazards Analysis methods: FM&EA, HAZOPS, What-If Checklist, Fault-Tree Analysis, LOPA, SIL, have become common. Expert has worked with, lead, and utilized all of them in his work. The goal is to avoid chemical plant accidents and serious incidents that endanger industrial workers, the community, environment, and destroy investment.
