BORON. He has directed the research of graduate and undergraduate students and postdoctoral associates in the synthesis, characterization, and studies of the chemical reactivity of new cage and cluster compounds involving boron. He and his students have pioneered the discovery and development of many novel compound types (e.g., stable multi-decker metal sandwich complexes, metal-rich metallaboron clusters, large carbon-rich carboranes), new reactions (metal-induced cage fusion), and techniques for determining the molecular structure of boron clusters (two dimensional boron-11 nuclear magnetic resonance).
AIR-SENSITIVE MATERIAL HANDLING. Expert is familiar with the handling of air-sensitive materials including reactive gases; the analysis, separation, and purification of new compounds in the laboratory; and the standard techniques used in compound characterization. He has knowledge of mass spectrometry, NMR, infrared, UV-visible spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. He is very knowledgeable of liquid chromatography, HPLC, and high vacuum techniques.
Consulting work over several years for a small private firm that is developing carborane-based drugs for use in anticancer therapy and other applications.
