METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE DEVELOPMENT. Expert is actively engaged in research and development of processing techniques for commercial manufacture of short and long fiber ceramic reinforced aluminum matrix composites. Much of the research leading to his three patents in this area focused on conditions necessary to promote wetting of the fiber reinforcement by the matrix and the resulting interphase formed between the matrix and reinforcement. A large number of designed experiments were used to effectively reduce theory to practice.
HEAT RESISTANT STEEL; AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL. Expert has extensive experience in the research, development, and application of both wrought and cast oxidation resistant steels for the automotive industry. These steels include both austenitic and ferritic types. Published data, oxidation theory, and accelerated testing techniques are used to determine the suitability of a specific alloy for each application. When necessary, selection of appropriate materials is strongly influenced by automotive requirements for low cost and high volume availability. Expert has also invented a number of relatively low cost iron base oxidation resistant steels for use in automotive gas turbine engines, piston engine exhaust systems, and heat resistant alloy applications for the heat treatment industry.
AUTOMOTIVE CERAMIC. Expert is one of the champions in a growing industry dedicated to the application of monolithic ceramics to mechanical devices. A significant portion of his career in ceramics has been devoted to automotive applications. These have included studies into the tribological behavior of various ceramics rubbing against steel, the nature of the fracture process in stressed applications, low thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion applications, and manufacturing considerations such as net shape processing, machining, and inspection. Carbide, nitride, and oxide ceramics have been extensively evaluated for applications including (but not limited to) automotive cam follower rollers and pads, valves, valve seats, fuel injector parts, pre-combustion chambers and bearing applications. Expert is a founding member of the United States Advanced Ceramics Association and is familiar with the advanced ceramics industry in the U.S. and Japan.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN PROCESS. Although not formally trained as a statistician, Expert has over 35 years experience in the application of designed experiments to research and development. He has experience-based expertise in the selection of appropriate experimental designs based on the nature of the research objective. These include (but are not limited to) screening, fractional factorials, full factorials, response surface, and optimization techniques. He uses novel methods to select the "vital few" from the many ideas which are generated during team interactions.
METAL ALLOY RESEARCH MANAGEMENT. Expert has been engaged in metal alloy research for over 35 years. This experience ranges from positions of Senior Research Scientist to full management responsibilities for a team of metallurgical and ceramic research engineers. He is well trained in the principles of behavioral science as applied to research teams and is a strong proponent of design of experiments applied to materials R&D.
On-Site Consulting
The company where Expert works- conducts company analysis services in which employees are surveyed on their current work attitudes. Once the data is analyzed, USI prepares a report showing the cultural norm of the present organization. The results are reported first to top management then to the employees. Areas covered in the survey are teamwork, managerial style, contribution, organizational characteristics, job and work attitudes, communications, employee influence, involvement-concern, and supervisory relations.
