Expert's failure investigations have encompassed a wide range of oilfield products including, but not limited to, wellhead and Christmas tree equipment, rock bits, OCTG, motors, packers, and downhole tools. Failure investigations have included but not been limited to the preparation of protocols, on-site examination of evidence; documentation, gathering, and reconstruction of samples for laboratory study; direction of laboratory testing for dimensional, chemical, mechanical, and microstructural characteristics of the failed components; determination of the failure origin and mechanism; preparation of a report explaining the cause of failure and relationship of component characteristics and operating conditions to the failure.
HEAT TREATMENT
Expert's heat treating experience includes managing heat treating facilities, including batch and continuous heat treating line, direct quench atmosphere furnace, vacuum furnace, induction hardening, nitriding and carburizing equipment. Activities have included, but are not limited to, commercial heat treating, development of heat treating procedures, rework of non-conforming material, furnace surveys, qualification and procurement of new equipment, and process verification testing.
MATERIAL SELECTION
His experience in selecting materials for various applications based on design specifications, customer requirements, and industry standards. Activities have included, but are not limited to, review of customer RFQ’s and other documents, first article testing, vendor audits, and competitive analysis. Factors evaluated include, but are not limited to, mechanical properties, hardenability, weldability, corrosion resistance, machinability, and cost.
CORROSION
Expert's experience in lab and field evaluation of various forms of corrosion including, but not limited to, sulfide stress cracking, stress corrosion cracking, sweet (CO2) corrosion, galvanic corrosion, corrosion fatigue, high temperature corrosion, and microbiologically induced corrosion.
WELDING
Expert's welding experience includes, but is not limited to, development and qualification of welding and brazing procedures, review of welding procedures versus customer requirements, qualification of welders, evaluation of filler materials, evaluation and procurement of welding equipment, metallurgical examination of welds, and analysis of failed welds. Experience with various welding processes including, but not limited to, SMAW, ESW, OFW, GMAW, GTAW, SAW, friction welding, and laser. Particular expertise in CRA cladding of oilfield equipment, hardfacing, and brazing of carbide materials.
TRAINING
Expert's training experience includes, but is not limited to, development of training courses in metallurgy, welding, heat treatment, failure analysis and other topics. Explained metallurgical concepts in an understandable manner to students with non-metallurgical backgrounds.
