Expert is a member of the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Working Group S3/WG48 on Hearing Aids, which continually revises Standard ANSI S3.22, "American National Standard: Specification of Hearing Aid Characteristics" (most recent revision - 2003).
Expert has had past experience and has continuing interest in the design and deployment of sensory aids for the deaf, blind, and deaf-blind.
Expert has had some success in resolving technical as well as management communication difficulties between interacting groups and individuals in industrial, academic, and clinical settings.
Expert has done research on cochlear neurophysiology, particularly electric volume conduction effects on the transduction process,and has continuing interest in active cochlear processes, the role of outer and inner hair cells and efferents.
At UCSF, Expert did research on rehabilitation of the profoundly hearing impaired, and fit hearing aids on patients who were otherwise candidates for cochlear implants. He chaired the Research Advisory Committee for the Helen Keller Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults and investigated tactual communication schemes for the deaf.
He has extensive older experience in electronic design, manufacturing and field engineering.
He worked with The Engineering Consortium, a developer of integrated circuits for the hearing aid industry: Design of programs used to specify electro-acoustic characteristics in multi-memory hearing aid circuits, screen displays that are user-friendly to fitters, tests for speech quality, and hearing-aid programming schemes for semi-skilled dispensers. He advised a major battery manufacturer on technical and marketing aspects of hearing aid batteries.He advised a hearing aid component manufacturer on contact bounce in a switch.He provided information to a venture capital firm about a proposed new hi-tech hearing aid.He advised a major manufacturer on compression to be used in FAA headsets.
