Expert consults regularly with both North American and overseas clients on paper manufacturing concerns. This includes issues of equipment and processes for new paper grades, quality improvement, cost improvement, and troubleshooting. He also teaches short courses and conducts seminars in paper manufacturing. He is an expert on paper processing machinery. He has studied methods of extending the useful life of older machinery by modifying it to produce value added paper products. He has investigated the machinery required for surface sizing.
Expert has developed a coating technology and process for paper used in facsimile machines and recording devices which can be imaged with a thermal print head. He worked with new producers of this paper in Asia, Australia, Latin America, and Africa.
Expert works regularly with clients on coating formulation, coating process, and paper quality improvement. He also teaches short courses and seminars in this area.
Expert is one of very few people knowledgeable in carbonless paper technology but not bound by a secrecy/employee/former employee agreement with one of the major producers. He has qualified a new carbonless solvent with the EPA, served as an expert witness on carbonless, and developed carbonless paper processes and facilities for new producers in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He has been qualified and testified in Federal court as an expert in papermaking, carbonless paper production and PCB-pollution from carbonless paper production in the 1954-1971 period.
He is skilled in the use of recycled fiber in traditional virgin fiber grades. He designed the process for the first mill in North America to convert office waste into a deinked pulp which was suitable for making into business papers. He has also consulted with major North American paper producers on process and equipment changes necessary for using recycled fiber in the production of high quality coated papers.
He has served as project engineer/consultant on paper machine and coater installations and rebuilds. He has served as an expert witness in litigation involving paper mill equipment contracts and qualified as an expert on paper engineering in both state and Federal court.

Consults with paper mills and specializes in coating. He has helped mills to reduce quality complaints by over 40% and also to increase production by more than 10%.He performs due diligence reviews of paper industry project financing and merger/acquisition analysis.Has guided the development of several new value-added grades of paper, including film coated offset and coated linerboard.Evaluated a new pigment for coated ink jet papers and filed a patent application on behalf of the client. He coordinated the client's commercialization of this new product.Has assisted both chemical and equipment suppliers in introducing new products and technology to the paper industry.
Expert is recognized as an expert in development of coated and other value-added papers, processing and use of recycled and non-wood fibers, application of innovative technology to the paper industry and commercialization of new technology and product developments. He has guided several startup companies to exit through acquisition and/or IPO.
He graduated from Western Michigan University with a bachelor's degree in pulp and paper technology and received a master of business administration in marketing management from Pace University.
Expert' six decades of paper industry experience include technical and operating positions with Hamilton Paper, Oxford Paper, Union Camp, and Westvaco; editorial experience with Paper Trade Journal; sales/marketing management positions with Merck Chemical, Lockport Felt, Asten Group, and Inventing/BTG Coating Systems.
In 1986 he became a consultant to the paper industry specializing in development of value-added and coated paper grades, recycled fibers processing and applications, paper and board made from non-wood fibers and marketing of innovative products and technology to the paper industry.
Expert serves Adjunct Professor of Chemical and Paper Engineering at Western Michigan University. He is a Fellow of TAPPI, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry and has served on the association's Board of Directors and received the TAPPI Distinguished Service Award. Expert has also been honored with the Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal – the paper industry’s highest award for commercializing technical and engineering developments on a global basis. In 2016 he was inducted into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame.
He has numerous publications on paper technology and marketing management. He serves on the Editorial Boards of Paper 360° and Tappi Journal.
He serves on the Board of the Western Michigan University Paper Technology Foundation and has been elected to the PTF Hall of Fame and the Western Michigan University Academy of Engineering Excellence.
