FORESTRY; ENTOMOLOGY. Expert has expertise in forest entomology with an emphasis on tree protection. He is very knowledgeable regarding tree-feeding insects in both forested and urban areas. He has investigated genetically engineered tree resistance to insects, primarily from the standpoint of preventing the development of immune insect biotypes.
INSECT. Expert is also very knowledgeable regarding the protection of other plant species from insects. He has researched the mechanisms of attack resistance in plants so that these mechanisms may be enhanced or exploited. This knowledge is used to behaviorally modify insects by deploying the chemical signals they use, to predict outbreaks by sampling plant traits, to kill or deter insects with plant products, and to elevate plant resistance by cultural, chemically elicited, breeding, and transgenic methods.
PEST CONTROL. Expert also has experience in agricultural entomology. He was involved in insecticide discovery, development of nontraditional pest control such as antifeedants and plant resistant inducers, and insecticide resistance management. Because of the nature of his research, he has worked in conjunction with tree producers, chemical companies, citizen groups, and arborists.
