Electronic Displays
ID: 108365
Illinois, USA
Expert has worked on electronic circuits and systems, both analog and digital, since 1944. His experience includes AM broadcasting, high-fidelity audio, a wide variety of instrumentation, ultrasonic light modulators, radar, and all the electronics associated with electronic displays, in frequency ranges from dc to rf. Several of his publications are concerned with circuit and system design and development.
A majority of Expert's research efforts have been devoted to applying electronics engineering and science to a variety of problems in pure and applied research, development, measurement, control, and other applications. Examples of his work include small electronic instruments; a low-temperature magnetometer; system, circuit, and device design of a wide variety of electronic displays; and high-vacuum systems for gas-discharge-display research. Expert's efforts have resulted in marketed products and manufacturing process improvements as well as publications and 14 patents.
Gas-discharge displays, both memory and non-memory types, have the unique property that the gas discharge can be used for Employer-scanning. This process can produce a dramatic reduction in the cost of drive circuitry, which is still a major issue for most display types. Expert has worked extensively in this area and has applied a variant of the technology in Lucitron's Flatscreen Gas-Electron-Phosphor display.
Expert was a consultant to a developer of guided-acoustic-wave touch-input devices, and has made contributions to acoustic, electronic, and mechanical design, as well as the application of these devices. He is knowledgeable about other types of touch-input devices, and has a working knowledge of ultrasonics in both solids and liquids.
Expert has published some 55 papers, and has been awarded 14 patents. He has written proposals and grant applications in a variety of fields, including such non-display areas as medical facilities. He has written and edited a large number of reports, proposals, and operating manuals. In addition, he has organized seminars and short courses, including a four-day course on electronic displays at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently an Associate Editor of the "Journal of the Society for Information Display" (formerly Editor). He was an Associate Editor of "IEEE Transactions on Electronic Devices" for seven years.
Expert has worked with various light emitters and detectors, has written on photometry (with special emphasis on display devices), and has done some work on optical image processing.
