In 1980 Expert provided testing project management and quality control services to a multi-billion dollar insurance firm on their renowned insurance policy management and billing system. For three years Expert developed testing methods, standards, and techniques and eventually was appointed corporate project administration manager for 600 analysts, programmers, and consultants.
Since 1974 Expert has worked continuously with the PICK system in all its forms. Now called the D3 database, the PICK system was first introduced in Expert's pioneering book Exploring the PICK System, published by Macmillan and Company. Expert provides consulting on all aspects of the PICK data base, from strategic planning to programming. He is currently working with PICK Systems, Inc. on a number of projects. Regarding the UniVerse database, Expert has been involved in the design, development, installation, and performance tuning, as well as application system development and conversion.
This modern form of multi-user computing is a fundamental part of the data base architecture for distributed processing systems. Expert both designs and implements client/server systems for clients, ranging from a dozen to thousands of workstations. Recently Expert published the first papers on The Transition Architecture, his model for rapid client/server development.
Originally trained as a computer software project manager, Expert has successfully administered over 12,000 computer software projects. One of the techniques developed by Expert is the rapid prototyping of database applications by means of Yourdon structured analysis applied to a relational data base application, with prototyping front-end screen and report generator. This approach reduces development cost by up to 35%.
The fundamental step in effective decision support is to build the conduit that gets the data into the 'lens' on the end-user's choice on a timely basis. This is the basis for the innovative designs of executive information systems developed by Expert for client companies since 1989. Beginning with the accounting and distribution of data, this technique provides great benefits in market management and planning.
In an effective management information system, the underlying conduit for timely distribution of the data provides full-blown office automation as a matter of course. This multiple-use of the executive and marketing management systems has been the foundation f's design and consulting work in this area since 1974.
During the microcomputer explosion of the 1980s, the "marbles got out of the bag" when the major computer manufacturers lost their control of computing technology. Expert's work in this area focuses on the effective use of commodity products to produce systems that are more powerful and yet less costly than proprietary systems. Different from the PDA, today's personal computer can be integrated into the fundamental information systems strategy for an enterprise, to the enrichment of both the organization and the individual.
The primary component of an effective management information system is a relational database. Expert's research in this area focuses on a natural (NF2) database for operational data and a fully-relational UNIX database for executive reporting and data analysis. When coupled in a TCP/IP network with personal computer workstations, the approach produces systems that are easier to manage and produce two to four times the effective throughput.
Since beginning with the multi-dimensional database in 1974, Expert has focused on UNIX-based relational databases, including the only true multi-dimensional ROLAP, "D3". He developed one of the first integrated decision-support networks to exploit the characteristics of these database models in commodity LANs, a copyrighted technique known as the "Transition Architecture".
Expert maintains that as part of a global information system design, electronic mail is an integral strategic resource. By using both the intrinsic mail capabilities of UNIX and the information content of the database, Expert designed a wide-area-network mail system model for corporate clients called "the Train" that can provide regular enterprise news, comment, and feedback instantaneously around the world.
Expert designs and implements information systems that are a repository of operational and managerial data, suspended in an environment that allows and facilitates manipulation and analysis at the desktop level.
As part of an on-going research effort in the effective use of corporate data, Expert is developing new models for management information systems and executive decision support that utilize operational data held in a non-intrusive network repository. This repository is linked via commodity networks to personal workstations equipped with pre-formatted analysis "agents" which can be spreadsheet templates refreshed with corporate data at regular intervals. The result is a style of management decision support that Expert has named "predictive operational management."
Since 1997 Expert has been developing interface software and custom programming for SAP, the IBM of the enterprise resource planning software industry. This includes ABAP, BAPI, ALE, BDC, and EDI. Recently Expert has extended his services in this area with programming for HTML and XML.
Mr. VanArsdsale states that all data processing to date has been a prelude. The computer systems industry is entering a new stage in which computing will finally deliver the promise to business. The data warehouse will manage data in way that will produce new knowledge, new intelligence, new efficiencies and profits for businesses. His experience in data management and the use of data warehousing suggests that any organization willing to make the relatively small investment will finally be able to harvest the business intelligence that they already own.
Expert states that in the modern systems project, the method of project management has changed. The iterative nature of the data warehousing project, the scientific scope of data modeling and repository project, the RAD aspects of the e-commerce presentation layer, all require new project management techniques. These techniques are, in effect, people techniques, augmented with new electronic tools. In his approach these tools can be embedded in the project deliverables themselves, so as to ensure that project management flows seamlessly into system management.
Expert states that the nature and the method of project management has changed. He is a vocal advocate of the OPM3, the current standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Project Management Institute. He regularly lectures and mentors project management professionals on the Organizational Project Management Maturity Model. He is published on the subject, and widely regarded as an expert on how to apply its Knowledge Foundation and software tools effectively.
Expert notes that the meaning of distributed processing has changed dramatically in the last few years. From this point on the changes will continue, dynamically, with each new wave of e-commerce. Today he assembles distributed processing systems with totally replaceable front-, middle-, and back-end components, utilizing the latest technology and still maintaining the required "inter-operability" necessary for the business. The skillful application of legacy concepts of what works and what doesn't, combined with obsessive imagination, is his outstanding qualification for this work.
