A pioneer in imaging technology, he chaired the IBM Interdivision Technology Liaison Committee for image technology while at IBM.

He managed the development of a successful ICR system for handwritten check amounts and has done comprehensive modeling of that application for banking use. He has conducted numerous interactive meetings with potential image application users in structured requirements definition sessions. He managed the development and implementation of a handwritten numeric character recognition system. He also led a comprehensive strategy review of character recognition technology with participation of experts throughout the industry. He has an in-depth understanding of the areas of image pre-processing, character segmentation, feature extraction, classification, and post-processing and their relative importance to the technology.

The number of picture elements per inch and the number of gray levels needed for image document processing is an area which he has done detailed analysis and design for document image processing. He was the decision maker for selecting spatial resolution in image system applications such as check image statements, intelligent character recognition for proof of deposit and remittance, and archiving of check images. He holds a U.S. patent related to spatial resolution. One of his career accomplishments was the architectural design and implementation of the IBM ImagePlus High Performance Transaction System (TM). He is an expert on high speed, high quality, and high throughput image capture, processing, storage, and retrieval. He authored three U.S. patents relating to imaging systems.

Expert has a thorough understanding of image processing hardware. Both as a developer and a competitive analysis professional, he has attained an in-depth knowledge of image capture, processing, and storage hardware. He continues to remain current through membership in AIIM and personal data collection.

Expert's understanding of image technology is based on 28 years of experience as a researcher and developer of image technology. He was an early researcher in scanning electron microscopy and electron beam testing. He also was an industry pioneer in applying image technology to document processing for bank checks. His perspective is often sought for new application and technology proposals for imaging. He can answer complex questions regarding image enhancement and image quality measurement.

His background includes the management of a major image system software project. He understands the area from both product developer's and an application user's point-of-view. A member of AIIM, he has at his disposal the information, contacts, and reference documents available to AIIM members. He has 12 years experience with check processing systems that use magnetic-ink character recognition (MICR). He managed the development of high speed check reader/sorter systems including microfilm, ink jet printer, and bar code reader features. He is a member of the ASC X9B9 standards committee that has the ANSI standard for MICR on checks. As part of a complete check processing image system, he managed the development of a magnetic-ink character (MICR) high speed printer. He has a thorough understanding of the printers and their technologies that are available for the check and remittance applications.

He has worked with the check interchange application requirement for several years and since 1991 has worked with the ASC X9B standards committee that has the charge of formulating the check image interchange standard for the financial industry. His consulting firm is currently a member of the X9B committee. He has a thorough knowledge of the details and the issues related to image interchange. He has extensive experience in the architectural design of remote check image concepts and has the ability to translate clients' unique remote configuration into practical remote image requirements and proposals.

Expert managed the development of an image system that included compression as a key image processing element. He has supervised comparative studies among various compression techniques and understands the strengths and weaknesses of the current set of techniques.
