He obtained a training in synthetic polymer chemistry, and specialized in physical polymer chemistry lateron. He was involved in kinetic studies of radical copolymerization reactions. On the basis of that he was able to assist a number of companies in the optimization of copolymerization processes. One of the largest challenges that he successfully tackled was the conversion of an existing polymerization plant from one type of copolymerization to another, i.e. the plant was designed for the production of a specific copolymer, but was later converted to the copolymerization of another comonomer pair. Lab scale polymerization experiments to find the optimum feed conditions, calculations related to safety, and heat management were conducted in this collaborative project.
His strongest points are his pragmatic approach towards solving problems, his creativity in finding solutions to questions/challenges, and his broad knowledge of the field of radical (co)polymerization, including the three main streams in living radical polymerization (nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer mediated polymerization (RAFT)).
